Dumper & Spring Testing Equipment

For manufacturers and OEM technicians, race engineers, crew chiefs, and suspension engineers, who need to quickly, accurately and reliably characterize dampers and springs, Roehrig Engineering, Inc.’s (REI) family of linear test systems, damper dynamometers and spring rating equipment is the industry’s system of choice when accuracy, quality and ease of use are demanded. With over 1000 systems installed and operating worldwide since 1990, REI continues to lead the damper dynamometer industry with technical innovations and features aimed at simplifying your testing and analysis.

How can Roehrig Engineering claim to be the world leader in damper dynamometers?

No other company in the history of the industry has sold to as wide a customer base as Roehrig Engineering. Included among our customers is nearly every shock and vehicle manufacturer in the world. We also support all the top racing teams in NASCAR, CART, Sports Cars, and the IRL, not > to mention a world champion F1 team. Not convinced?
Take a look at our list of customers, and see for yourself.

At the heart of every Roehrig Engineering system is the use of devices which convert electricity directly
to motion. Advantages of this type of technology over comparable servohydraulic systems include:

Higher Efficiency - because the energy conversion is direct, energy is not wasted in motor and pump
inefficiencies, hydraulic line losses, seal friction and heat removal.

Better Repeatability - our systems operate independent of issues such as temperature, fluid
contamination, servovalve wear and hydraulic accumulators, so results are more repeatable.

No Mess - without the need for hydraulics, issues such as oil cleanliness, hazardous waste disposal,
spill containment and specimen contamination are no longer of concern.

Lower Maintenance - with fewer moving parts, maintenance ccosts are lower, spare parts are kept
to a minimum, downtime is reduced and troubleshooting is significantly simplified.

electro-magnetic linear actuation

REI produces two standard Electro-Magnetic Actuated Test Systems capable of meeting your varying wave
form needs. They are able to run any user defined wave form with 1.0 micron encoder accuracy.

The EMA Series - 2K and 4K

The EMA (Electro-Magnetic Actuator) test system is a development tool for serious
damper manufacturers. It can create virtually any wave form: Sine, Triangle,
Sine on Sine, Square and combinations. EMA features a 7 inch (177mm) stroke
range, excellent frequency response OVER 100 Hz, and velocities UP TO 4 meters
per second.

EMA provides all the dynamic advantages of a servo hydraulic dynamometer
without the safety, energy, cost, facility and environmental problems associated
with hot, high pressure hydraulic oil. It provides extremely fast response as well
as excellent positioning accuracy, while eliminating backlash, and wear.

The EMA can play back track/road data collected from a number of commonly used
data acquisition systems. Partial, full, or multiple lap play back is possible.
Shaker rig data can also be used. EMA is also fully capable of reproducing sinusoidal
waveforms identical to our industry standard crank style dynamometers.

The EMA system uses Shock6.0 Test Control and Damper Analysis software.

The EMA can be built with a CE cage crossbar controls, and automatic lockouts
for safety and compliance.

The EMA Series is a must have tool for all serious test and development labs.

spring testing equipment

Hydraulically Actuated Spring Rater - SASR
(Stand Alone Spring Checker)

This stand-alone machine is a versatile spring test/rating station.
The 10,000 lbs. maximum force hydraulic jack is mounted into a
rugged super-structure. Actuated by a hydraulic hand pump
(optional electric and pneumatic pumps available), the Stand Alone
Spring Rater is instrumented with a 5,000 lbs load cell and a
displacement sensor.

Our SPRING™ test and analysis software guides the user through
test creation and execution. After an initial user-defined compression,
SPRING™ software calculates hundreds of instantaneous spring rates
during a controlled release of the spring through the test and preload
ranges.

Advanced Spring Rater

The RoSA Series features integrated brushless servo motor and
inverted epicyclic roller screw in one small package with peak
force capacities up to 25,000 lbs, speeds up to 40 ips, and submicron
displacement resolution.

An excellent all-electric replacement for hydraulics offering 15 to 20
times the life of ballscrew actuators. Within the RoSA Series are
various configurations for specific requirements, including the valve
Spring Rater ideally suited for engine valve springs.

Efficient direct electric Roller Screw Actuation.

REI also offers Spring and Torsion
Bar Raters that can work in
conjunction with any of our
damper dynamometers as well
as fully functioning stand alone
units.

shock/damper testing equipment

Computer Controlled Electro-Mechanical
Damper Dynamometer

REI offers 6 models of damper dynamometers; fully computer controlled
with variable motor speed models each with features, capabilities and
pricing designed to meet your testing and budgetary needs.

This series of crank-style dynamometers ranges from the 2HP to
the 30HP ideal for reproducing fixed amplitude sinusoidal motion
at a relatively low cost. Capabilities up to 5,000 lbf (22kN) and
over 78in/second (2m/s) are possible.

SHOCK6™ - Uniquely-Responsive Customer Service and Customer Driven Software!
The SHOCK™ Test Control and Damper Analysis software enables you to perform static and dynamic
gas tests, temperature or time based warm up of a damper, as well as stop at bottom dead center of
the damper stroke. The software also allows the user to run CVP, PVP, or Multi CVP tests.

production line testing equipment

LEMA: Production Line Testing
Electro-magnetic Linear Actuator

Roehrig Engineering produces a fully automated test station
for in-line production testing of damper performance.

The unit pictured has a three station, rotating feeding unit
for doing a two speed test every 6 seconds.

A user defined pass fail analysis is done and damper
determination done.

Testing is done with Roehrig Engineering's EMA series,
however, any of our units could be adapted depending on
wave form specs, power and velocities required.

The EMA was used in this case due to varying stroke of the
two stage test.

The system pictured here was installed over two years ago.
It replaced a competitor's system with a more compact,
less expensive to maintain and more repeatable piece of
equipment. It has since run around the clock and logged
over 10,000,000 cycles.

It uses a three station table, automatic grippers, PLC control and analysis designed by Roehrig Engineering.

DLT - DURABILITY
The Roehrig Engineering solution to durability

We matched our world leading crank type dynamometers with our
very own software to create a solution to durability testing at a
reasonable cost.

We can turn any of our standard units into a durability unit based
on customer requirements for size, power and number of
specimens to be tested.

Using our DLT: Durability Life Testing Software, we are able to
monitor up to 4 specimens at a time.

While running a durability test of user defined length, we can use
nested performance criteria independent of the durability test.

This allows us to do both durability testing to failure while also
getting performance results along the way.

Uses REI's DLT: Durability Life Testing software - monitor up to
4 pieces while running a durability cycle with nested independent
performance criteria.
